Midland County Friend of the Court Reduces Services

The Midland Daily News (January 31, 2007) reported today that "Due to recent county budget cuts, the Midland Friend of the Court needs to reduce services." This is great news for local residential property tax payers since a large number of open cases in Midland County are actually middle and upper-class families that should not be receiving free services in the first place. The Title IV-D program that funds the various Michigan Friend of the Courts is a free for all welfare spending program that has been burdening US taxpayers because a substantial number of people that are receiving services are affluent self-sufficient individuals that would not be beneficiaries of any other welfare program under Title IV.

    • Friend of the Court to reduce services

        The FOC lost three of 18 employees – a senior accounting supervisor and two part-time coops, a loss of 80 staff hours per week."
        According to Catherine Davis, FOC director, "effective Feb. 1, phone accessibility will be limited to the hours of 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. No phone calls will be answered outside of these new hours."
        Historically, Midland has been one of a few FOC offices in the state that answered phones from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The last phone survey indicated that the FOC staff accommodates approximately 80,000 phone calls per year.
        Davis added, "We tried to maintain business as usual in spite of the cuts. Unfortunately, that is not feasible. Our staff has had to work overtime and on weekends just to keep up. Clearly, the only alternative is a reduction in services. Limited phone hours is a first step, and future steps may be required."
